This Bavarian town, founded in 817, houses the Playmobil headquarters, a medieval castle-turned-museum, and a planetarium. Its preserved old town streets tell stories from the Middle Ages.
Günzburg, a town of 20,350 residents in Bavaria, lies where the Günz and Danube rivers meet. Walk through medieval streets to see the Market Square's 14th-century tower, visit Germany's only Habsburg castle, or spend a day at Legoland Deutschland, which draws families from across Europe to its themed attractions and rides.
Getting to Günzburg
You can reach Günzburg by car via the A8 motorway between Munich and Stuttgart. The town's train station has IC and EC connections to major cities, with direct trains to Paris, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna.
Exploring the Old Town
The Market Square forms the heart of Günzburg's medieval center, where the Town Tower has watched over the town since the 14th century. The former Austrian mint building now serves as the town hall. As you walk through the narrow lanes, you'll pass nearly 200 buildings with Habsburg-era architectural elements like decorated doorways, ornate window frames, and painted facades.
Legoland Deutschland
Since 2002, Legoland Deutschland has welcomed visitors from spring through fall. The park includes seven themed areas with rides and shows. You'll see detailed Lego models of European landmarks built from millions of bricks. More than 1.9 million people from over 120 countries visit annually.
Religious Architecture
Dominikus Zimmermann, who also designed the Wieskirche, completed the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) in 1741. The church interior combines white and gold decorative elements with ceiling frescoes depicting biblical scenes. The altar features marble columns and gilded sculptures typical of 18th-century Rococo style.
Along the Danube
You can cycle along the Danube Cycle Route through town or swim in the lakes of the Donauried natural area. The Waldbad swimming pool in the Auwald forest opens during summer months, with separate pools for swimming laps and children's activities.
Museums and Cultural Sites
The Museum of Local History (Heimatmuseum) on Rathausgasse displays artifacts from Günzburg's Roman and Habsburg periods. The Forum am Hofgarten hosts theater performances, concerts, and conferences throughout the year. Local guides lead walking tours covering specific periods of town history, from Roman settlements to Habsburg rule. Tours start at the Market Square and last approximately two hours.
