Heidelberg, a city in southwestern Germany, captivates visitors with its rich history and academic spirit. Nestled along the Neckar River, this city invites you to explore its medieval castle, stroll through its Renaissance Old Town, and experience the energy of Germany's oldest university. You can climb the Königstuhl hill for a view of the city, cross the Old Bridge spanning the Neckar, or join students in one of the many cafes dotting the streets.

Exploring the Old Town (Altstadt)

Heidelberg's Old Town, or Altstadt, forms the heart of the city. As you walk down the main street, Hauptstrasse, you'll find yourself surrounded by well-preserved Baroque buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Marktplatz (Market Square) serves as a central gathering point, hosting markets and events throughout the year. Here, you can admire the Church of the Holy Spirit, a Gothic structure that dominates the square. The Studentenkarzer, a former student prison, gives you a glimpse into university life in centuries past.

Visiting Heidelberg Castle

Perched on the Königstuhl hill, Heidelberg Castle is a partially ruined fortress dating back to the 13th century. Take the funicular railway up to the castle for views over the Old Town and Neckar Valley. Inside the castle grounds, you can explore the Renaissance facades, the German Apothecary Museum, and the Great Tun - an enormous wine barrel with a capacity of over 220,000 liters.

Walking the Philosopher's Way

For a different perspective on Heidelberg, head across the Old Bridge to the north bank of the Neckar and climb the Philosopher's Way. This path winds through vineyards and gardens, giving you views of the city, castle, and river. The route got its name from the university professors and philosophers who once frequented it, finding inspiration in the surroundings. Along the way, you'll encounter several viewpoints and gardens, including the Philosopher's Garden, a spot for rest and reflection.

Discovering the University of Heidelberg

Founded in 1386, the University of Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university and one of Europe's most respected institutions. You can explore several university buildings in the Old Town, including the Old University building with its ornate baroque facade. The University Library, one of the oldest and largest in Germany, houses an extensive collection within its grand architecture. As you walk around the university area, you'll likely see students hurrying between classes or relaxing in the many cafes nearby.
