A small town in the northeastern German state of Brandenburg, Neuruppin is best known as the birthplace of the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. The town’s well-preserved old town is a mix of half-timbered buildings, narrow lanes and squares, and the impressive Schloss Neuruppin, a Baroque palace that now serves as a museum. The surrounding countryside is a mix of forests, lakes and meadows, popular with hikers and cyclists. There are also a few small museums and galleries, and a couple of good restaurants.
