Schwangau, a small Bavarian village at the foot of the Alps, is home to the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle. You can hike the Tegelberg mountain, sail on Lake Forggensee, or learn about royal history at the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. Located at the southern end of the Romantic Road, Schwangau is a key stop for those touring Germany's scenic route.

Location and Geography

Schwangau is in the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, 4 km from the town of Füssen. Four lakes surround the village: Alpsee, Schwansee, Forggensee, and Bannwaldsee. Two mountains define the landscape: the Tegelberg and the Säuling, both over 2,200 meters high. This setting at the edge of the Ammer Mountains creates opportunities for year-round activities.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle, built in the 19th century for King Ludwig II, is Schwangau's main attraction. Its romantic architecture inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. You can explore the ornate interiors, including the Throne Room and the Singers' Hall. For a striking view of the castle, walk to the nearby Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) over the Pöllat Gorge.

Seasonal Activities

Schwangau has something to do in every season. In summer, you can hike or cycle through the alpine landscape on trails of varying difficulty. The four lakes allow for swimming, sailing, and surfing. Winter brings opportunities for cross-country skiing and sleigh rides. Take the Tegelbergbahn cable car to the top of the Tegelberg mountain for extensive views of the region and access to more hiking trails.

Museum of the Bavarian Kings

To learn about the region's royal history, visit the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. Opened in 2011, the museum tells the story of the Wittelsbach dynasty, one of Europe's oldest royal families. You'll see centuries of artifacts and treasures, which provide context for the nearby castles and insight into Bavaria's past.

Getting There and Accommodation

To reach Schwangau, take a bus from nearby Füssen. If you're driving, the trip from Munich takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. For overnight stays, you'll find a variety of options in Schwangau, from family-run guesthouses to larger hotels with spa facilities. Many rooms offer views of the surrounding mountains and castles.
