Zeitz

Zeitz is a small town in the eastern part of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is located on the banks of the Elbe River, about 15 km north of the state capital Magdeburg.

Zeitz has a population of about 9,000.

The town was first mentioned in a deed of donation by Emperor Otto I in 961. Zeitz became a town in 1292 and was granted market rights in 1349. The town hall was first built in 1407. From 1539 to 1541, Zeitz was the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach.

The principal sights of Zeitz are the Gothic town hall, the Renaissance palace of the electors of Saxony, the Romanesque collegiate church of St. Peter, the late Gothic monastery of the Augustinian canons, and the remains of the castle of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach.
