Middelfart

Yes, it's the town with the funny name. No, we never get tired of it.

This calm coastal town on Denmark's Funen island has a bridge-watching culture and a long history of whale hunting. The Little Belt waters are home to porpoises year-round.

Middelfart, located on Denmark's island of Funen, sits along the narrow strait of Little Belt where porpoises swim in the waters below. You can walk 65 meters above sea level on the Old Little Belt Bridge, create your own ceramics at CLAY museum's workshops, or explore the medieval St. Nicholas Church with its 17th-century carved altarpiece. The town extends along 117 kilometers of coastline within the Little Belt Nature Park.

Walking Above the Little Belt

Take a guided tour 65 meters above sea level on the Old Little Belt Bridge. From this height, you'll look across the strait separating Funen from mainland Jutland. Porpoises frequently swim in the waters below, especially during summer months. The walk extends across the bridge while your guide explains the bridge's construction techniques and points out the different species of marine mammals living in the strait.

Exploring the Town Center

Walk the main pedestrian street that runs parallel to Little Belt, with water views at the end of each cross street. St. Nicholas Church combines architectural elements from multiple periods: a Late Romanesque chancel, a 14th-century tower, and a nave from the late 15th century. At Henner Friiser Hus, a restored half-timbered building from 1575, exhibits display tools, furniture, and photographs documenting daily life in medieval Middelfart.
