Villers-Cotterêts is a small town in the Aisne department in the Hauts-de-France region of north-central France. The town is best known as the birthplace of French author and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The town is also home to the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which is dedicated to the author's life and work. The museum is housed in the Château de Villers-Cotterêts, which was built in the 15th century and is now a national historic monument.
