Caernarfon is a place of myths and legends. The imposing castle, which dominates the town, is the birthplace of King Edward I and the scene of his coronation in 1284. The castle is one of the finest examples of late-medieval military architecture in Europe. The walls are 15 feet thick in parts and the castle was originally surrounded by a deep, water-filled moat. The town, which grew up around the castle, is a maze of narrow streets and alleyways, many of which are still cobbled. The town is also home to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers Museum, which tells the story of the regiment from its formation in 1689 to the present day.
