** Fiskardo, a village on the northern tip of Kefalonia, charms with its colorful Venetian-style houses and active harbor. This small fishing community, largely unaffected by the 1953 earthquake, retains much of its original Ionian island character. You can swim at nearby Foki and Emblisi beaches, eat fresh-caught fish at waterfront tavernas, and experience the calm pace of Greek island life.**

Preserved Architecture

Fiskardo stands out among Kefalonian villages due to its well-preserved 18th-century buildings. The village escaped major damage from the devastating 1953 earthquake. As you walk through Fiskardo, you'll see two-story houses painted in pastel hues, with red-tiled roofs and narrow balconies adorned with flowers. These structures create a striking contrast against the blue waters of the harbor.

Beaches and Swimming

Emblisi Beach, about 1.5 km north of the village, has clear waters and a pebble shore surrounded by cypress trees. For a more secluded spot, head to Foki Beach, 2.5 km southeast of the harbor. This small cove features white pebbles and is shaded by olive trees. If you're up for a longer trip, visit the twin beaches of Agia Ierusalim, where you can enjoy clean waters and eat at beachside tavernas.

Local Cuisine and Dining

Try local specialties like astakomankaronada (lobster pasta) or Kefalonian meat pie. Tassia's taverna, run by the same family for over 50 years, serves traditional Kefalonian dishes prepared with locally-sourced ingredients. Remember to pair your meal with Robola, the island's signature white wine.

Day Trips and Nearby Attractions

From Fiskardo, you can easily explore other parts of northern Kefalonia. Take a short drive to the village of Assos, where you can visit a 16th-century Venetian castle. For those interested in local ecology, the nearby Environmental Center of North Kefalonia provides details about the local marine life. You can also catch a ferry to the neighboring island of Ithaca for a day trip.

Getting There and Around

Fiskardo is located about 50 km north of Argostoli, Kefalonia's capital. You can reach it by car in about 1.5 hours, driving through mountain roads with wide sea views. Once in the village, explore on foot, as the harbor area doesn't allow cars. If you arrive by boat, you'll find several mooring spots in the harbor. During summer months, regular ferry services connect Fiskardo with Ithaca and Lefkada.
