Skiathos, located in the Sporades archipelago of Greece, offers visitors a variety of attractions such as the vibrant Koukounaries Beach, the historic Bourtzi Fortress in Skiathos Town, and the scenic hiking trail that leads to Kechria Beach. Whether you’re interested in exploring the local culture, enjoying water sports, or discovering unique rock formations at Lalaria Beach, Skiathos has something to offer for every traveler.

Beaches

Skiathos has over 60 beaches along its 44 km coastline. Koukounaries, on the southwest coast, is one of the most visited. Its long stretch of golden sand is backed by a pine forest and protected wetland. For a more secluded experience, take a boat trip to Lalaria Beach on the north coast. This white pebble beach is only accessible by water and has unique rock formations. Banana Beach, near Koukounaries, is known for its water sports and beach parties.

Exploring Skiathos Town

The main settlement of Skiathos Town sits on the southeast coast. Its narrow streets are lined with whitewashed houses, small shops, and tavernas. Walk along the old harbor to see fishing boats and yachts, or climb up to Bourtzi, a small peninsula with the ruins of a 13th-century Venetian fortress. For a cultural stop, visit the house-museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis, a significant Greek author born on the island.

Nature and Hiking

Skiathos has nearly 200 km of hiking trails. Many routes pass through pine and oak forests, offering views of the coastline. A well-trodden trail starts at Aselinos Beach and goes past Kounistra Monastery before ending at Kechria Beach. The island's interior also has olive groves and fruit orchards. Birdwatchers can spot various species at Lake Strofilia, a protected wetland near Koukounaries Beach.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Skiathos Town is the center of the island's nightlife. Bars and clubs cluster around the old port area, with many staying open until early morning. For a more relaxed evening, have a drink at one of the beach bars on Megali Ammos or Vromolimnos Beaches. In summer, open-air cinemas show films under the stars, often including "Mamma Mia!", parts of which were filmed on the island.

Getting There and Around

Skiathos has an international airport with direct flights from several European cities in summer. Year-round, you can fly to Athens and take a connecting flight. Ferries connect Skiathos to the Greek mainland ports of Volos and Agios Konstantinos, as well as to neighboring islands Skopelos and Alonissos. On the island, a frequent bus service runs between Skiathos Town and the main beaches. Taxis and rental cars are also available, though parking in town can be difficult.
