In northeastern Hungary, Sárospatak sits along the Bodrog River, where 12,000 residents live among centuries-old buildings and modern organic architecture. You'll find students walking to classes at the Reformed College founded in 1531, locals soaking in the mineral-rich thermal pools, and visitors exploring the red Renaissance tower of Rákóczi Castle. The surrounding hills hide wine cellars and a former millstone quarry turned lake.

Rákóczi Castle

Walk through the Gothic-Renaissance palace to find the Sub-Rosa balcony room, where Hungarian nobles planned their resistance against Habsburg rule in the 17th century. The castle museum shows you medieval cooking techniques and contains Europe's first cannon-casting workshop from the Early Modern period. During the Siege Days festival each July, medieval battle reenactments take place in the castle grounds.

Activities Along the Bodrog River

Rent a canoe to paddle the calm waters of the Bodrog River, or walk along its banks. Local guides lead day trips that stop at riverside villages. While the water near town moves slowly, you'll find faster currents upstream for more challenging paddling.

Megyer Mountain Quarry Lake

A small lake now fills the former millstone quarry, 4 miles from town. Follow the walking trails around the water's edge to see the steep volcanic rock walls, where you can still spot the marks left by quarry workers. The surrounding forest creates a cool microclimate, making this an ideal summer walking spot.

Wine Cellars of Hercegkút

Visit the parallel rows of wine cellars built into the hillsides of Hercegkút, 3 miles from Sárospatak. These 18th-century cellars maintain perfect conditions for aging local wines, especially the Furmint variety. Many winemakers open their cellars for tastings and tours - ask at the town's tourist office for current opening times.

Makovecz Architecture

Architect Imre Makovecz designed several buildings throughout Sárospatak using curved lines and traditional Hungarian patterns. Look for his wing-shaped roof at the Árpád Vezér Grammar School, and visit his other works at the Community Centre and apartment buildings on Hild Square.

Végardó Thermal Bath

Since 1959, mineral-rich waters have supplied the Végardó Thermal Bath's pools. The water temperature ranges from 28 to 38 degrees Celsius across multiple indoor and outdoor pools. The minerals in these waters are particularly known to ease joint and muscle discomfort. The bath complex stays open year-round, with extended hours during summer months.
