Duhok is a city in Iraqi Kurdistan. It is the capital of the Duhok Governorate. The city is located on a tributary of the Khabur River. The estimated population in 2016 was 1,013,000. The Kurds call the city “Duhok” or “Duhe”. The city was known in classical antiquity as Arbela. It was the capital of the Adiabene kingdom. The city was the last capital of the Ottoman Empire in Iraq. The modern city was founded in 1842 by Dawood Pasha, the vizier of the Ottoman Empire, and the British consul in Mosul. The city has a diverse population of Muslims, Christians, and Yazidis. The majority of the population is Kurdish.
