Tikrit is a city in central Iraq, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Baghdad. It is the administrative center of the Salah ad Din Governorate. Tikrit is situated on the Tigris River, and is the largest city in the Salah ad Din Governorate. The city has a population of about 280,000 people. The University of Tikrit, founded in 1987, is located in Tikrit.
