Karbala is a city in central Iraq, about 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Baghdad. It is located on the east bank of the Euphrates River. Karbala is the capital of Karbala Governorate. The city, which is mainly inhabited by Shia Muslims, is known for the Battle of Karbala, where Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, was killed. Karbala is also home to the Imam Hussein Shrine, which is considered by Shia Muslims to be the third holiest site in Islam.
