Khorsabad is an ancient city in northern Iraq, about 22 kilometres (14 miles) northeast of Mosul. It was founded by Sargon II in 717 BC. The city was the capital of the Assyrian Empire under Sargon II, and was home to the palace of Sargon II. The city is well known for the colossal statues of Assyrian kings, which were carved at Khorsabad and found there in the early 20th century. The palace was excavated by the French archaeologist Paul-Émile Botta in 1843. Khorsabad is a possible site of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
