Nasiriyah is a city in southern Iraq, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad. It is the capital of Dhi Qar Governorate. Its population in 2003 was about 479,000, making it the fourth largest city in Iraq. Nasiriyah is a diverse city, with a mixture of Shiite and Sunni Muslims, as well as a large Christian population. The city is the birthplace of Saddam Hussein.
