The ruins of Ur are located in modern-day Iraq, in the province of Dhi Qar. The ancient city was one of the most important in Mesopotamia, and is thought to be the birthplace of the prophet Abraham. The ruins are situated on the east bank of the Euphrates River, and are spread out over an area of some 120 hectares.
The site has been inhabited since the Ubaid period, some 6,500 years ago, and saw its height of prosperity during the Ur III period, in the 21st century BC. At its peak, the city was home to some 40,000 people, and was famed for its great wealth, its grand temples, and its skilled artisans. The city was destroyed by the Babylonians in the 18th century BC, and never recovered its former glory.
