Medieval stone buildings and narrow streets line the cliffs above Lake Como. Visitors can explore 12th-century churches, walk the lakefront, or visit Villa Monastero's art collection.
Varenna sits on the eastern shore of Lake Como, an hour by train from Milan. In this small Italian village, you can climb to the medieval Castello di Vezio for panoramic views, walk through Villa Monastero's mile-long garden filled with Mediterranean and tropical plants, or dine at waterfront restaurants in the old fishing harbor. The village connects by ferry to nearby towns like Bellagio and Menaggio.
Getting to Varenna
Direct trains run hourly from Milan to Varenna-Esino-Perledo station, taking about 60 minutes. From the station, walk down steep steps to reach the village center. If you're already at Lake Como, frequent ferries connect Varenna with Bellagio (15 minutes), Menaggio (20 minutes), and other lake towns.
Walking Through the Village Center
The heart of Varenna centers around Piazza San Giorgio, where the 14th-century Church of San Giorgio stands with its tall bell tower. The narrow lanes leading down to the water are lined with stone buildings painted in warm yellows and pinks. These steep paths, called contrade, connect the upper village to the waterfront.
Villa Monastero and Its Gardens
Villa Monastero, originally a 12th-century Cistercian monastery, later became a private residence. You can explore both the villa's museum and its extensive botanical gardens. The garden path extends for a mile along the lake, with Mediterranean, tropical, and local plants arranged on terraced levels. The villa's rooms contain furniture and decorative objects from the 1800s.
Castello di Vezio
The medieval Vezio Castle sits on a hill above Varenna. Two paths lead to the castle: a steep cobblestone route from the northern end of town (30 minutes), or the gentler Sentiero Scabium near Villa Monastero. You can watch falconry demonstrations during summer, and climb the tower for views across Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.
Waterfront Areas
The lakeside promenade (Passeggiata) connects the ferry dock to the old harbor. This elevated walkway runs right above the water, with clear views across Lake Como. At the southern end, you'll find the old fishing harbor, Riva Grande, where small boats dock among waterfront cafes and restaurants.
Swimming and Beaches
The main beach, Lido di Varenna-Perledo, has sun loungers and a boat dock. The beach area includes both grass and sand sections. You can rent equipment and use the changing facilities during summer months.
Where to Stay
Hotel Villa Cipressi occupies a 1400s building with terraced gardens north of the center. Hotel du Lac sits right on the water, with 16 rooms containing 19th-century furniture and balconies overlooking Lake Como. For a smaller option, Albergo Milano has 14 rooms and apartments in the heart of the old town.
Local Food and Restaurants
Osteria Quatro Pass serves regional dishes like lake fish risotto in a small dining room. The restaurant at Hotel du Lac focuses on northern Italian cuisine, while Albergo del Sole prepares grilled vegetables and local cheese dishes. Most restaurants have outdoor tables with views of Lake Como.
