Vercelli is a small city in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, about 60 miles (100 km) east of Turin and about 25 miles (40 km) west of Alessandria. It is the capital of the province of Vercelli.
The city is located on the River Sesia in a fertile plain. It is surrounded by the Alps, the Apennines, and the Po River.
Vercelli is a very old city, dating back to the Celtic era. The first known inhabitants were the Ligures, followed by the Celts. In the 1st century BC, the Romans conquered the city, which became an important center of Roman culture.
The city is a major center of the Italian textile industry and has a long and proud tradition of silk manufacturing.
