Petra

Petra lies hidden within southern Jordan's sandstone cliffs, where ancient Nabataeans created over 600 stone facades. Walk through the narrow Siq canyon to reach the 40-meter-high Treasury building, then climb to the Monastery perched 800 steps above the valley floor. Walking Through the Siq

Your journey into Petra starts with a 1.2-kilometer walk through the Siq, where natural canyon walls tower 80 meters overhead. Look for the ancient water channels running along the walls - the Nabataeans engineered these to bring water into their city. The path narrows to three meters at points before opening to your first view of the Treasury. Plan for a 30-minute walk, with benches placed along the route for resting.

Exploring the Main Trail

The 8-kilometer Main Trail runs from the visitor center to Qasr Al-Bint. After passing the Treasury, you'll walk along the Street of Facades, where 40 tomb entrances line the cliff face. The 7,000-seat theater sits at the city center, cut directly into the rock. Continue to the Royal Tombs, where the Urn Tomb's wide courtyard and the Silk Tomb's red and orange striped rock patterns stand out among the structures.

Climbing to the Monastery

To reach the Monastery, climb 800 stone steps up the mountain - a 45-minute ascent. The building's facade stretches 50 meters wide and 45 meters high, surpassing the Treasury in size. Stop at the small caves and tombs along the way, or grab a drink from one of the Bedouin-run shops. From the plateau, you can see across Petra's ruins and into the Wadi Araba desert valley.

Practical Information

Enter at 6:00 AM to explore before the heat and crowds arrive, or come late afternoon when temperatures cool. The site closes at sunset. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring at least 2 liters of water per person. Local guides can lead you to hidden tombs and explain the architectural details. Join an evening class at the Petra Kitchen to cook traditional dishes like mansaf and maqluba with local chefs.

Archaeological Discoveries

Archaeologists uncovered a tomb with 12 skeletons beneath the Treasury in 2024. The city's water system included dams, underground cisterns, and ceramic pipes that brought water to public fountains and private homes. Excavations have revealed only half of ancient Petra - many residential areas remain buried under centuries of sand.
