Sutomore is a coastal town in Montenegro with a long sandy beach lined with cafes and ice cream shops. You can swim in the clear Adriatic waters, explore the 15th-century Haj-Nehaj fortress, or walk through the ruins of an 11th-century monastery. The town's prices for food and accommodation are typically 30-40% lower than in nearby Budva, making it popular with weekend visitors from Serbia and northern Montenegro.

Getting to Sutomore

The Belgrade-Bar railway has a station in Sutomore, with daily trains connecting to Montenegro's capital and Serbia. The town lies on the Adriatic Highway (E65/E80), and the Sozina tunnel links it directly to Podgorica. Buses run every hour to Bar and Budva, while services to Podgorica operate several times daily.

Beach Life

The main beach stretches for 2.5 kilometers, covered in fine gray sand. The water gets deep gradually, and the beach has multiple lifeguard stations during summer. You can rent sun beds, umbrellas, and water equipment like jet skis and catamarans from June to September. The sand contains iron-rich minerals, giving it a darker color. For a quieter swim, head to Canj beach, a pebble shore 3 kilometers north of town that attracts fewer visitors.

Nightlife and Entertainment

From June through mid-September, cars are banned from the beachfront promenade after 6 PM. About two dozen bars and cafes line the street, most staying open until 1 AM. Three nightclubs - Maximus, Club 23, and Tropicana - open from 11 PM until dawn, playing both international hits and Balkan pop. The promenade has many food stands selling grilled meat (ćevapi) and local seafood dishes.

Historical Sites

The Haj-Nehaj fortress stands 230 meters above sea level. Built by Venetians in the 15th century, it requires a 20-minute uphill walk on a narrow path to reach the main entrance, marked by a carved winged lion. The Ratac monastery ruins date to the 11th century and show evidence of both Orthodox and Catholic worship before its destruction by Ottoman forces. Two medieval churches remain in town: St. Dimitry's from the 13th century, and St. Fekla's from the 13th-14th centuries, which has separate Orthodox and Catholic sections.
