Victoria, also known as Rabat, is the capital of Gozo island in Malta. This compact city has ancient fortifications, lively squares, and narrow streets. You can climb the Cittadella fortress, see the baroque St. George's Basilica, or walk through the Villa Rundle Gardens. From Victoria, you can easily travel to other parts of Gozo.

Exploring the Cittadella

The Cittadella sits on a hill overlooking Victoria. This fortified area dates back to the Bronze Age, but the Knights of St. John built most of the current structures in the 17th century. Walk along the defensive walls for views over Gozo. Inside the Cittadella, you'll find the Cathedral of the Assumption with its baroque interior. The Gozo Museum of Archaeology displays artifacts from the island's ancient past. In the Old Prison, you can see centuries-old graffiti etched into the walls by former inmates.

St. George's Basilica and Independence Square

St. George's Basilica stands in the center of Victoria. This baroque church is dedicated to Gozo's patron saint. Its facade features intricate stone carvings, while inside you'll see marble columns and painted ceilings. Nearby Independence Square, known locally as It-Tokk, is the main public space. The Banca Giuratale, Victoria's former town hall built in 1733, overlooks the square. Each morning, vendors set up stalls for an open-air market. You can sit at one of the cafes around the square to watch local life.

Green Spaces and Shopping

Villa Rundle Gardens offer paths lined with trees, fountains, and benches. You can walk or have a picnic here. For shopping, go to Republic Street, Victoria's main commercial area. You'll find local boutiques and international brands. The Arkadia Commercial Centre has multiple shops in one building. For local handicrafts and souvenirs, visit the stalls at It-Tokk market in Independence Square.

Getting Around Victoria and Gozo

You can walk to most attractions in Victoria within 15 minutes from the central bus station. This station connects to villages and beaches across Gozo. Renting a car allows you to explore Gozo's rural areas and coastal sites. Taxis are another option for getting around.

Festivals and Events

Victoria hosts several annual festivals. During the Feast of St. George in July, you'll see religious processions, fireworks, and band marches in the streets. The Feast of the Assumption in August has similar celebrations. The Victoria International Arts Festival runs from June to July, featuring classical music, jazz, and folk performances at venues around the city.
