Gozo, the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, is a Mediterranean destination with distinctive coastlines and clear waters. A short ferry ride from Malta brings you to this compact island where you can explore the Ġgantija Temples, swim at Ramla Bay's reddish-gold beach, and wander through the narrow streets of Victoria's Cittadella. You'll find opportunities for coastal hikes, visits to former Azure Window site, and dining on fresh seafood in local restaurants.

Discovering Victoria, Gozo's Capital

Victoria, also known as Rabat, is the main urban area of Gozo. The Cittadella, a fortified area on a hill, has been a settlement since the Bronze Age. As you walk through its narrow streets, you'll find the 17th-century Baroque Gozo Cathedral and the remains of an old prison. In the city's main square, It-Tokk, you can sit at cafes, browse shops, taste local foods, or purchase handmade lace, a traditional Gozitan craft.

Exploring the Ancient Ġgantija Temples

The Ġgantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site, date back over 5,500 years, making them older than both the Pyramids and Stonehenge. These megalithic structures include two temples enclosed by a massive stone wall. You'll see altars, hearths, and decorative carvings that show aspects of the island's Neolithic culture. Visit the on-site museum to view artifacts found during excavations and learn about the historical context of the temples.

Enjoying Gozo's Beaches and Bays

Gozo's coastline has a variety of beaches and secluded bays. At Ramla Bay, you can swim and snorkel in clear, shallow waters and relax on reddish-gold sand. For a quieter experience, visit San Blas Bay, a small, red sand beach reached by a steep path. Its somewhat difficult access means you'll often find fewer visitors here than at other beaches on the island.

Walking Gozo's Coastal Paths

Gozo's varied terrain creates interesting walks and hikes. Take the Xlendi Walk along the coastline for wide views of the Mediterranean. This route passes by the Sanap Cliffs, among the highest points on the island. Another option is the Dwejra Walk, which leads to the former location of the Azure Window. While the arch fell in 2017, you can still explore interesting geological formations like the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock.

Tasting Gozitan Mediterranean Cuisine

Gozo's food incorporates Mediterranean flavors and local farming traditions. Try ftira, a bread filled with potatoes, tomatoes, and other local ingredients. You'll find seafood dishes like lampuki pie (fish pie) on many menus. Don't miss ġbejna, a small round cheese made from sheep's or goat's milk, a local specialty. You can taste these dishes at restaurants in Victoria and in coastal villages such as Xlendi and Marsalforn.

Navigating Gozo

Gozo has a reliable public bus system with routes to most parts of the island. Buses typically run once an hour in each direction. For more independence, rent a car or scooter. You can see most of the island in a few days due to its small size. Taxis are also available, and some visitors choose guided jeep tours to see the main sights of the island.
