Bielsko-Biała rises at the foot of the Beskid Mountains, where fourteen peaks create a dramatic backdrop to this southern Polish city. Walk through streets lined with Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau buildings, spot the Neptune fountain in the market square, or take the gondola to Szyndzielnia's 1,001-meter summit. Visit the animation studio that brought Reksio and Bolek and Lolek to Polish television screens, or admire the 19th-century decorated facades along ulica 11 Listopada.

Getting to Bielsko-Biała

National Road 1 connects the city to Katowice, where it meets Motorway A4. The main railway station, Bielsko-Biała Główna, dates from 1890 and still has its original frescoes and architectural details. From the station, walk 10 minutes to reach the city center. The compact layout makes it easy to explore central attractions on foot.

Exploring the Old Town

The 17th and 18th-century buildings surround the market square (Rynek), where a Neptune fountain marks its center. Look up to see the Sułkowski Castle, a 14th-century fortress later updated with Renaissance elements. Inside Saint Nicholas Cathedral, sunlight streams through stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes. Along the streets near the Rynek, Art Nouveau buildings display intricate carved stone details and decorative metalwork on their facades.

Mountain Activities

The gondola lift runs year-round to Szyndzielnia mountain's summit (1,001 meters). At the top, stop at the mountain hostel, which has welcomed hikers since 1897. During winter months, head to the Dębowiec complex for skiing and tobogganing. Follow the red-marked trail from Szyndzielnia to reach Klimczok peak (1,117 meters), the city's highest point.

Cultural Institutions

Step into the Historical Museum's Old Fabricating building to see working textile manufacturing equipment from the 1800s. Watch puppet performances at the Banialuka Puppet Theatre, which hosts an international festival every second year. Studio Filmów Rysunkowych, operating since 1947, displays original animation cells and equipment used to create Poland's classic cartoons.

Local Food Scene

Try żurek, a tangy fermented rye soup served with boiled eggs and sausage, or sample gołąbki - cabbage leaves filled with rice and meat in tomato sauce. Local restaurants serve pierogi with various fillings, from savory meat to sweet fruit. The local cuisine reflects both Silesian and Lesser Polish cooking methods, with dishes like kluski śląskie (Silesian dumplings) appearing alongside Lesser Polish specialties.
