Angra do Heroísmo is a quiet, whitewashed town on the island of Terceira in the Portuguese Azores. It was founded in 1450 by Prince Henry the Navigator and is one of the oldest European settlements in the New World. The town’s winding streets and pretty squares are a delight to explore, and there are some excellent restaurants and bars. The town is also home to a few interesting museums, including the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo, which houses a collection of artefacts from the island’s history. From Angra do Heroísmo, it’s easy to explore the rest of Terceira, which is a beautiful, unspoilt island with dramatic volcanic landscapes.
