Located on Lake Vänern's southern shore, this small Swedish town has a well-preserved 17th-century main square and the baroque Läckö Castle nearby.
Lidköping sits on Lake Vänern's southern shore, home to 40,000 residents. You can explore the white baroque Läckö Castle, watch thousands of cranes during their spring migration at Lake Hornburga, or learn about centuries of ceramic craftsmanship at the Rörstrand Museum. The Lidan River runs through the town center, creating distinct old and new quarters with art galleries, local markets, and waterfront areas. Walk along Hindens Rev - a narrow peninsula extending into Sweden's largest lake, or hike the pine-covered slopes of Kinnekulle mountain.
Exploring the Town Center
The Lidan River divides Lidköping into two areas. In the old quarter, look for the Old Town Hall, which began its life as Count Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie's hunting lodge. The streets follow a grid pattern, dating from the town's rebuilding after the 1849 fire, with buildings in soft pastel colors. Visit Limtorget square, the only surviving section of the pre-1849 old town.
Lake Vänern Activities
Lake Vänern shapes daily life in Lidköping year-round. In summer, people gather at the sunbathing areas below the square bridge, where you can often hear live music. Take boat trips from the guest harbor to explore the lake's shoreline. Walk along Hindens Rev, a narrow peninsula with water views on both sides as it stretches into the lake.
Museums and Cultural Venues
At the Rörstrand Museum, you'll see ceramics spanning several centuries from one of Europe's oldest porcelain factories. The museum includes an art gallery and restaurant. Visit the Vänermuseet (Lake Vänern Museum) to see aquarium displays of local fish species and learn about the lake's ecosystem. The Lidköping Art Gallery displays contemporary works by Swedish and international artists throughout the year.
Kinnekulle Area
Kinnekulle mountain rises above the surrounding landscape, its flat top covered in pine forest. Follow the walking trails through different plant zones across the mountain. Between mid-March and early April, you can watch around 10,000 cranes at Lake Hornburga as they stop during their migration from Spain to northern Sweden.
Läckö Castle
The 700-year-old Läckö Castle sits on a Lake Vänern peninsula, its white baroque walls visible from far across the water. Walk through the furnished rooms to learn about the castle's role in Swedish history. In summer, you can attend concerts and exhibitions in the castle's courtyards and halls.
