Fethiye, a coastal town in southwestern Turkey, sits on a natural harbor surrounded by pine-covered mountains. You can explore ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into nearby cliffs, relax on the blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz beach, or wander through the abandoned Greek village of Kayaköy. Take a boat trip to nearby islands, hike parts of the Lycian Way, or try paragliding from Babadağ mountain. Fethiye also tempts visitors with its fresh seafood and colorful local markets.

Location and Geography

Fethiye lies on Turkey's southwestern coast, about 45 minutes drive from Dalaman Airport. The town nestles between pine-covered mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The harbor, with its numerous islands and surrounding hills, creates a stunning backdrop for the town.

Beaches and Coastal Areas

Several beaches are within easy reach of Fethiye. Çalış Beach, just west of town, stretches for 4 km and draws visitors for its colorful sunsets. Ölüdeniz, 15 km south, has a blue lagoon that often appears on lists of top beaches worldwide. For a quieter experience, head to Kabak Bay, a cove surrounded by pine forests.

Historical Sites and Ancient Ruins

Fethiye and its surroundings have a rich history dating back to Lycian times. In the town center, you'll see rock tombs carved into the cliffside, including the large Tomb of Amyntas from the 4th century BC. Remnants of the ancient city of Telmessos are scattered throughout modern Fethiye. A short drive away, you can explore Kayaköy, an abandoned Greek village that provides insight into the region's more recent past.

Outdoor Pursuits and Nature

Fethiye caters to active travelers. You can go paragliding from Babadağ mountain, with tandem flights available for beginners. The views over Ölüdeniz during the descent are breathtaking. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, hike sections of the Lycian Way, a 540 km trail that passes through the region. For water-based activities, take a boat trip from Fethiye harbor to the 12 islands in the gulf, where you can swim and snorkel in clear waters.

Local Cuisine and Markets

Turkish cuisine is readily available throughout Fethiye. Visit the fish market in the old town to buy fresh seafood and have it cooked at nearby restaurants. On Tuesdays, a large market sells local produce and spices. Don't miss trying gözleme, a savory stuffed flatbread that's a specialty of the region.

Getting Around

Dolmuş minibuses are the main form of public transport in Fethiye, connecting the town center with nearby beaches and villages. Water taxis run between Fethiye harbor and Çalış Beach, giving you a pleasant alternative to road transport. Renting a car can be useful for exploring more remote areas and nearby attractions.

Day Trips from Fethiye

Fethiye serves as a good base for exploring the surrounding region. You can visit Saklikent Gorge, Turkey's longest canyon, about an hour's drive away. The ancient Lycian sites of Xanthos and Letoon, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are within driving distance. For a change of scenery, take a day trip to the Greek island of Rhodes, which you can reach by ferry.
