Located at Taiwan's southern tip, this beach town has clean white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and year-round warm weather. Popular among surfers and snorkelers, with active night markets and food stalls.
Kenting National Park covers Taiwan's southernmost peninsula, where you'll find the 1882 Eluanbi Lighthouse, the coral reefs of Houbihu Harbor, and the limestone caves of Silver Dragon Cave. Walk through tropical forests in Sheding Nature Park, swim at Baishawan's white sand beach, or explore the night market along Kenting Street, where local vendors sell grilled seafood and fresh fruit drinks.
Getting to Kenting
From Kaohsiung, take the Kenting Express bus from Zuoying HSR station (2.5 hours) or join a shared taxi service for a faster trip. Shared taxis run regularly between Kaohsiung and Kenting's main street.
Transportation Within Kenting
You can rent an electric scooter from shops along the main street to explore the national park. While local buses connect the main beaches and attractions, a scooter gives you more flexibility to visit multiple locations across the peninsula.
Best Beaches for Swimming
Baishawan Beach extends along the western coast with calm waters and wide sandy shores. Xiaowan, a small cove east of the main street, attracts fewer visitors than other beaches. South Bay (Nanwan) has equipment rentals for water sports, including jet skis and banana boats.
Natural Landmarks
Silver Dragon Cave and Fairy Cave show the area's history as an ancient coral reef. In Sheding Nature Park, you can walk through paths surrounded by limestone rocks and tropical trees. At Maobitou Park, the coastline consists of weathered coral limestone cliffs and rock formations.
Night Market and Food Scene
From 5 PM, food vendors set up along Kenting's main street, selling grilled seafood, Teppanyaki, and local snacks. After dark, the street fills with beach-themed drink stands and music.
When to Visit
Summer (June-August) brings warm weather and the most visitors, with occasional typhoons. March to May and October-November have mild temperatures and fewer tourists. Winter temperatures remain suitable for swimming, though strong winds can affect some beach activities.
Water Activities
The clear waters around Houbihu Harbor are good for snorkeling. Local dive shops run scuba courses and reef trips. In winter months, consistent winds create conditions for surfing at several beaches along the coast.
