Wels

Austria’s oldest town, Wels is a gem of a place that has managed to avoid the tourist traps of its more famous neighbours. The town’s well-preserved medieval centre is a joy to wander, with narrow streets, atmospheric squares and a wealth of churches and other historic buildings. There’s also a lively arts and culture scene, with a number of galleries and theatres, and a lively nightlife, with plenty of pubs and clubs. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and there’s a wide range of places to eat, from traditional Austrian restaurants to international cuisine. Wels is also a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside, with the lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut region just a short drive away.
