Molenbeek-Saint-Jean

Molenbeek-Saint-Jean is a gritty, inner-city suburb of Brussels that has become notorious as a terrorist hotbed. A lack of opportunity and feelings of alienation among the young, predominantly Muslim population have helped make the area a breeding ground for Islamic extremism. In November 2015, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean was home to the mastermind of the Paris terror attacks and the scene of a bloody shootout with police. The Belgian government has pledged to crack down on the area, but it will be a long and difficult task. In the meantime, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean remains a fascinating – and potentially dangerous – place to visit.
