Benešov, home to 16,000 people in the Czech Republic’s Central Bohemian Region, lies 32 kilometers southeast of Prague. Founded in the 11th century, the town has medieval roots alongside Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings. Konopiště Castle, a 13th-century fortress rebuilt as a Renaissance and Baroque palace, defines Benešov’s skyline. This was the residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand before his assassination in 1914. The Gothic Church of Saint Nicholas and a central square filled with pastel-colored buildings anchor the town center. Direct train and road links to Prague and a calm atmosphere make Benešov a straightforward day trip or break for those traveling through the region.

Konopiště Castle: Residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Konopiště Castle shapes Benešov’s history and landscape. Constructed in 1294 as a fortress inspired by French design, it underwent Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque modifications. Archduke Franz Ferdinand lived here until 1914, filling the interiors with hunting trophies, a chapel decorated with carved wood, and an armory holding medieval weaponry. The grounds include a greenhouse, rose gardens, and peacocks that wander near walking paths. Guided tours take you through the archduke’s private rooms and explain how his collections reflect aristocratic life before World War I.

Churches and Buildings in Benešov’s Center

The Church of Saint Nicholas, built in the 13th century, remains Benešov’s oldest standing structure. Its Gothic bell, created in 1322, is one of the Czech Republic’s earliest surviving examples. A short walk away, the Baroque Church of Saint Anne and a former Piarist college present detailed stucco decorations and frescoes by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi. Masarykovo Square, the town’s central hub, mixes 18th-century townhouses with a contemporary town hall known for its clean lines. The Holocaust Memorial at the New Cemetery, housed in a repurposed 19th-century ceremonial hall, provides a space for reflection.
