Located in the southwestern part of Czechia, CHKO Šumava is a protected landscape area known for its extensive forests, peat bogs, and glacial lakes. It is home to diverse wildlife including lynx, owls, and woodpeckers, making it a key spot for nature observation. The area also features historical sites like the Vydra River Valley and traditional wooden houses, offering a glimpse into the region's past while providing ample opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities.

In CHKO Šumava, you will find the Black Lake (Černé jezero) and Devil's Lake (Čertovo jezero), two glacial lakes that are popular sites for visitors. The Vydra River Valley is another must-see, offering picturesque views and well-marked trails along the river's boulder-strewn course. The Srní Wolf Enclosure lets you observe wolves in a natural setting, providing an educational experience about these magnificent creatures.

Historical Landmarks

Don't miss the ruins of Kašperk Castle, which sits atop a hill and offers panoramic views of the surrounding forest. Built in the 14th century, it provides a look into medieval architecture and history. The area around Kvilda showcases traditional wooden houses that illustrate the rural lifestyle of the region's past inhabitants. This village is also the gateway to many trails and outdoor activities.

Nature and Wildlife

The Boubín Forest is one of the oldest primeval forests in Central Europe. A walk through this forest reveals ancient trees, some over 400 years old. The park’s various peat bogs, like Chalupská slať, offer unique flora and fauna. Birdwatchers will enjoy the abundance of woodpeckers and owls. Lynx, an elusive predator, also inhabits these woods, though sightings are rare.

Activities

Hiking and cycling are popular activities with numerous marked trails such as the Modrava – Tříjezerní slať route. In winter, cross-country skiing becomes a common way to explore the landscape. Canoeing is possible on parts of the Vltava River, offering a different perspective of the park. For a challenging hike, try the Poledník Lookout Tower, which provides sweeping views from its summit.
