Gifhorn is a small town in the German state of Lower Saxony, about 30 km south of Hanover. It's best known as the birthplace of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The town is home to a pretty market square, a few churches, and a castle. Gifhorn is also a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside, including the Harz Mountains.
