Wilhelmshaven

From Imperial Navy to Europe's biggest container ships.

This coastal German city, established in 1871, houses one of Europe's largest naval bases and Germany's second-biggest container port on the North Sea shoreline.

Wilhelmshaven sits on Germany's North Sea coast, where massive container ships dock at Europe's deepest harbor. You can climb aboard the 40-meter-high missile destroyer Mölders at the German Naval Museum, walk across the vast Wadden Sea mud flats to spot seals, or join 200,000 visitors at the Weekend on the Jade festival. The city's South Beach stretches for one kilometer along the waterfront, with swimming zones in summer and a year-round promenade.

Summer and Autumn Festivals

The "Weekend on the Jade" transforms the port area in early July with local food vendors and live music performances across multiple stages. In October, 24 tall ships sail into the harbor for the JadeWeserPort Cup, and you can explore their decks. Artists paint large-scale murals on city center buildings during the three-day International StreetArt Festival.

Wadden Sea Nature Walks

Walk across the mud flats of Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park with expert guides to see seals, crabs, and coastal birds up close. The Wadden Sea Visitor Center explains the local ecosystem through hands-on exhibits and posts daily tour schedules. At Südstrand beach, you'll find designated swimming areas from June to September and a paved waterfront path for walking year-round.

German Naval Museum and Maritime History

Step aboard the missile destroyer Mölders, which towers 40 meters above the museum grounds. Explore the submarine U 10 and mine hunter Weilheim to see their crew quarters, navigation rooms, and combat centers. The main building contains military equipment, uniforms, and ship models dating back to 1848. In summer, harbor tours depart from the museum dock at 10:00 and 14:00 daily.

Weather and Best Times to Visit

North Sea breezes keep winter temperatures around 1°C and summer temperatures near 16°C. Visit between March and May to watch bird migrations at the Wadden Sea, June through August for beach activities, or September for outdoor festivals under clear skies. Winter temperatures typically stay above freezing.

Transportation Connections

Trains connect Bremen Airport to Wilhelmshaven hourly, requiring a 30-minute transfer at Bremen Central Station. The complete journey takes 2.5 hours. The JadeWeserPort welcomes cruise ships, while separate harbors handle cargo vessels and naval ships.
