Nuuksio National Park, 35 km from Helsinki, spans 45 square kilometers of Finnish wilderness. You can walk through pine forests on marked trails between 2-7 kilometers, swim in any of the 80 small lakes, or watch for the rare Siberian flying squirrels in their natural habitat. The Finnish Nature Center Haltia teaches visitors about the country's environments through hands-on exhibits, from the southern archipelagos to the northern tundra.
Lakes and Forests
The park's rocky landscape includes more than 80 small lakes and ponds. Pitkäjärvi, the largest lake, runs north to south through the center of the park. In the central Haukkalampi area, pine and spruce trees reach heights of 20-30 meters, some dating back over 100 years. Mixed forests in other areas contain birch trees alongside younger pines and spruces.
Seasonal Activities
You can find blueberries, lingonberries, and yellowfoot mushrooms throughout the park from July to October. Cross-country skiing trails open when snow covers the ground, typically from December to March. The hiking trails stay open year-round, with wooden boardwalks helping you cross wet areas during spring thaws and autumn rains. The lakes warm up enough for comfortable swimming from June to August.
