Canet-en-Roussillon sits along the Mediterranean coast in southern France, 15 kilometers east of Perpignan. You can walk the 9-kilometer stretch of sandy beach, take sailing lessons at the marina, or browse books at the beachfront library. In the old village center, climb the medieval castle tower for views across the Gulf of Lion, or cycle along the Voie Verte coastal path toward Leucate.

Beaches and Swimming

The 9-kilometer Mediterranean coastline has fine sand that slopes gently into clear water. Seven lifeguard stations monitor the beach from mid-May to mid-September, and daily cleaning keeps the sand in good condition. Children can play safely in the shallow waters, while the calm surf suits beginning swimmers. At Plage du Grand Large, you'll find a first-aid post and facilities for visitors with reduced mobility.

Summer Beach Activities

From June to September, morning beach yoga sessions and fitness classes take place directly on the sand. You can rent loungers and umbrellas from seasonal beach clubs along the coast. The Biblioplage, a free beach library, stocks over 150 books and magazines - grab a book and read under the sun or in one of the shaded areas.

Water Sports and Maritime Activities

The marina serves as the starting point for water sports. Several schools teach kitesurfing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddleboarding, with equipment available to rent. Local boat operators run coastal tours, and the protected location in the Gulf of Lion creates ideal conditions for learning water sports.

Local Markets

Shop at the weekly markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for fresh produce, local cheeses, and regional wines. In summer, additional vendors join the market, selling seasonal fruits and vegetables. You can talk directly with local farmers and food producers about their products.

Historical Buildings

Walk through the medieval castle in the old village center to see exhibits about the town's past. The 19th-century Château de l'Esparrou opens its gardens to visitors, while the Saint-James church displays Gothic architectural elements. The narrow streets around these buildings contain stone houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Getting There and Around

Perpignan International Airport is 20 minutes away by car or bus. Trains connect Perpignan to Paris (5.5 hours), Toulouse (2 hours), and Marseille (4 hours). In Canet-en-Roussillon, you can walk between the beach, old village, and marina. The Voie Verte cycling path connects to Leucate, running along the coast for 15 kilometers.
