Carbonia is a city in the province of South Sardinia, Italy. It is the second most populated city in Sardinia after Cagliari. The city, located in the Sulcis region, is an important industrial center, whose economy is based on coal mining and steel production.
The city was founded in 1937 as a new town to house the workers of the nearby mines. The old city, located on the slopes of the Monte Sirai, was abandoned.
Carbonia is a city of contrasts. The new town, built in the 1930s, is a typical example of Italian Rationalism, while the old city, located on the slopes of the Monte Sirai, is a ghost town.
The city is home to the largest coal mine in Europe, the Carbosulcis mine.
