Sant’Antioco is an island located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sardinia, west of Sicily and north of Libya. The island is about 10 km long and 6 km wide, with an area of about 62 km². It has a population of about 9,000, concentrated in the town of Sant’Antioco. The island is part of the province of South Sardinia.
The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The Phoenicians founded a colony there in the 9th century BC, and the Carthaginians later ruled the island. It was conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, and subsequently became a part of the province of Sardinia. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the island was conquered by the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Normans, the Swabians, the Aragonese, and the Spanish.
