The town is built around the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Gonnos, which was destroyed by the Arabs in the 9th century. The town was rebuilt in the 14th century, and took its current name.

Gonnosfanadiga is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful countryside and the many wine-cellars located in the town.
