A coastal town on Italy's Amalfi Coast with the longest uninterrupted beach in the region. Medieval towers and lemon groves dot the hills around its active fishing port.
Maiori stretches along Italy's Campania region, where a kilometer-long sandy beach draws families throughout summer. Walk up 700 steps to the 11th-century Castle of San Nicola, explore the blue-lit Grotta di Pandora by boat, or step into the 13th-century Collegiata Santuario with its striking majolica-tiled dome. This coastal town became the backdrop for Italian director Roberto Rossellini's acclaimed films in the 1940s and 50s, including "Paisà " and "The Miracle."
The Longest Beach on the Amalfi Coast
A kilometer-long sandy beach runs along Maiori's coastline, formed by the 1954 floods that changed the town's landscape. You'll find both free public areas and beach clubs where you can rent loungers for €15-20 per day. Walk the waterfront promenade to find local gelaterias, cafés, and restaurants with sea views.
Getting to Maiori
From Naples International Airport, take a train to Salerno (90 minutes), then catch a SITA bus or ferry to Maiori. Summer ferries run daily between Maiori and nearby towns like Amalfi, Positano, and Salerno. By car, follow the A3 highway to Vietri sul Mare, then take the coastal road (Strada Statale 163) to Maiori.
Medieval Fortifications
Look for the Norman Tower marking the town's entrance from both sea and road. High above Maiori, the 11th-century Castle of San Nicola sits on a hilltop. Climb 700 steps for panoramic views of the coast, or drive up the main road. The castle grounds open daily from 9 AM to sunset.
Historic Churches
The 13th-century Collegiata Santuario di Santa Maria a Mare stands in the town center, its majolica-tiled dome visible from most streets. Visit between 8 AM and 7 PM to see the interior. The Church of Santa Maria Olearia, built into the cliffside in the 11th century, contains three chapels with medieval frescoes. This former Benedictine abbey, founded in 973, opens Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM.
Sea Caves and Boat Tours
Take a boat tour to the Grotta di Pandora, where sunlight creates blue reflections on the water among stalactites and stalagmites. Local operators run 2-hour tours from Maiori's port between April and October. The nearby Grotta Sulfurea contains natural sulphurous springs. Book tours at the harbor or through your hotel.
The Path of Lemons
Walk the ancient footpath connecting Maiori to Minori through the village of Torre. The 45-minute trail winds through terraced lemon groves where farmers still cultivate citrus fruits. Start early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun, and wear sturdy shoes for the stone steps.
Film Location History
Roberto Rossellini filmed several movies in Maiori between 1946 and 1953. Each November, the town hosts a film festival where judges present the Premio Internazionale Roberto Rossellini award. Visit the town hall to see photographs from Rossellini's filming days in Maiori.
