A coastal town in northern Malta with the island's longest sandy beach, medieval churches and World War II shelters carved into limestone cliffs.
Mellieha, a village in northern Malta, sits on a hilltop above Malta's longest sandy beach. You can climb the 17th-century Red Tower for views across three islands, walk through 500-meter-long World War II shelters, watch migratory birds at Ghadira Nature Reserve, or visit the 1980s Popeye Village movie set with its wooden buildings and daily shows.
Beaches Around Mellieha
Mellieha Bay extends 800 meters along the coast, with shallow waters that reach far from the shore. You'll find umbrella and lounger rental stations along the beach, and the calm waters work well for families with children. Paradise Bay and Golden Bay have fewer visitors, while from Armier Bay you can see Comino and Gozo islands across the water.
Walking Through the Village Center
The Parish Church, built between 1883 and 1930 by local residents, stands at the village center. The main street runs parallel to a newer road that leads to Mellieha Bay, with stone staircases connecting both streets. You can stop at small cafes and traditional Maltese restaurants on either street, many serving fresh seafood and local dishes.
Natural Areas and Parks
Ghadira Nature Reserve includes Malta's largest wetland area where you can watch migrating birds and see salt marsh plants. The reserve operates from September to May. At Majjistral Nature and History Park in the northwestern coast, you can walk along limestone cliff trails and find small hidden coves.
Getting Around
Buses run between Mellieha and Valletta (routes 41, 42, 49) and the airport (X1). The Gozo Ferry terminal at Cirkewwa is 6 kilometers away. The village streets involve uphill walks and stairs, but you'll see Mediterranean views throughout your walk.
Historical Sites
St. Agatha's Tower (Red Tower) on Marfa Ridge housed 30 soldiers when it was built in 1649, with supplies for a 40-day siege. The World War II air raid shelters beneath Mellieha now contain exhibits showing daily life during wartime.
Day Trips from Mellieha
Gozo ferries depart every 45 minutes and take 25 minutes to cross. Regular boats go to Comino's Blue Lagoon from Cirkewwa harbor. Popeye Village, built as a movie set, now runs family shows and activities throughout the day.
