The glittering cliffs at Stångehuvud nature reserve in Lysekil, Sweden. The red granite cliffs are noted for their colour and the large feldspar and mica crystals (about 10 x 10 mm) that make any part of the cliffs glitter when the sun reflects off them. The cliffs in the nature reserve were saved from quarrying at the beginning of the 20th century by Calla Curman. She bought the whole area and donated it to Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1925.This image illustrates how light, at different angles, is reflected off the feldspar crystals in the rock. | Lysekil in Sweden

Lysekil is a small town on the west coast of Sweden, in Bohuslän. It’s known for its pretty harbour, with a mix of old wooden houses and modern apartments, and its lively nightlife. There are several good restaurants and a few pubs, as well as a few small shops. The town is surrounded by beautiful nature, with forests and mountains just a short drive away.

What people say about Lysekil

Lysekil is where I spent every summer growing up, and I really like the place. It is a typical Swedish summer town on the west coast with nicely curved cliffs and a few beaches. The town itself is very different throughout the year. Going there during the off-season gives you the impression that it is very slow and rather empty, while the population grows by several hundred percent over the summer and everything comes to life. I like both experiences, one for its calm and almost meditative feeling when heading down to the ocean completely alone, and one for the joy of enjoying the summer after a long cold and dark winter. Go here during the summer and enjoy Swedish summer with the Swedes when we are all happy and enjoying our vacation. Enjoy an ice cream by the ocean, take a dip, play mini-golf, and eat something made with the local seafood.
