Iznik is a sleepy lakeside town in Turkey’s northwest, best known for its dazzling Ottoman-era tiles. The town was the capital of the Ottoman Empire in the late 15th century, and the tiles that adorned the palaces and mosques here are some of the most beautiful in the world. Many of the tiles have been removed and are now on display in museums around the country, but there are still some beautiful examples to be seen in the town itself. Iznik is also a great spot for a relaxing lakeside holiday, with a lovely promenade running along the water’s edge and a selection of restaurants and cafes.
