Exploring the French Quarter

The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. As you walk its streets, you'll see buildings with wrought-iron balconies, small courtyards, and gas lamps that reflect the area's 18th and 19th-century roots. Jackson Square is at the center, with the St. Louis Cathedral on one side. Street performers and artists often gather in and around the square. For local snacks, try Café du Monde for beignets and café au lait or find a po' boy sandwich at a nearby shop.

Where to Hear Live Jazz

New Orleans is where jazz originated, and you can still hear it played throughout the city. Preservation Hall hosts nightly concerts of traditional New Orleans jazz in a small, simple venue. On Frenchmen Street, you'll find several clubs playing various jazz styles, from brass bands to modern fusion. To learn about jazz history, visit the New Orleans Jazz Museum, which displays instruments and memorabilia, including Louis Armstrong's first cornet. If you're in town in late April or early May, check out the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for a wide range of local and international music.

Creole and Cajun Food Experiences

New Orleans cuisine combines French, Spanish, African, and Native American influences. You can try classic Creole dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans and rice at established restaurants such as Dooky Chase's and Galatoire's. For something more casual, get a seafood po' boy at Parkway Bakery or a muffuletta sandwich at Central Grocery. Crawfish is popular when in season, and bananas Foster is a dessert created in New Orleans. If you want to learn more about local cooking, look for classes or food tours in the city.

Riding the Streetcars

New Orleans' streetcar system is both useful for getting around and interesting to ride. The St. Charles line, which has been running continuously longer than any other in the world, passes mansions and universities in the Garden District and Uptown areas. The Canal Street line goes from the French Quarter to City Park and the New Orleans Museum of Art. For a ride along the Mississippi, take the Riverfront line. These old green and red cars let you see different parts of the city and stop at various points of interest.

I came here for a long weekend on a trip with my mom. We had a blast! We wandered the streets, checked out some craft beer spots, and enjoyed coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde -- a must visit!

We also loved the St. Louis Cathedral and getting lost in the French Quarter and Warehouse District.

I would love to go back to New Orleans and discover more of the city! I barely scratched the surface.

In New Orleans, you will also find a mix of culinary traditions just like in New York, but the ingredients are very different here. From Creole and Cajun cooking to French and Spanish influences, the city has a unique, vibrant culture that is reflected in its flavorful cuisine.

What to eat in New Orleans

Dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, po'boys, muffulettas, and beignets are a few of the iconic dishes that capture the city's diverse history. Gumbo is a classic Cajun dish that is a thick soup with chicken or seafood, andouille sausage, and okra. Jambalaya is a hearty rice dish that is made with chicken, sausage, and veggies. Po'boys are sandwiches made with French bread and filled with roast beef, fried oysters, or shrimp. Muffulettas are Sicilian-style sandwiches made with salami, ham, cheese, and olive salad served on a round sesame loaf. Lastly, beignets are the classic New Orleans dessert, a French-style doughnut covered in powdered sugar.

February is a time of great excitement in New Orleans; while all the world broadcasts festivals, the festival broadcasts itself in New Orleans.

Unlike Rio's Carnival, renowned for its samba parade, where samba schools compete in a highly choreographed and visually stunning procession, Mardi Gras puts its focus on community engagement, involving elaborate floats, marching bands, and participants throwing beads, trinkets, and other items to the crowd.

The event, celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, paints the town in hues of purple, gold and green. Tourists and locals alike gather on the streets to witness the grand parades, donning vibrant masks and tossing beads. The "throws", as they're locally known, are a distinctive part of Mardi Gras and can range from beads to doubloons and even coconuts by social clubs called “Krewes.”

For when you’ve had your fill of beads, Doubloons and coconuts, New Orleans offers still more. On Frenchmen Street, just steps outside the French Quarter, the city’s finest join the extraordinary New Orleans live jazz tradition to create the perfect end to a New Orleans evening.

The street also has excellent contemporary Nola dining at the Marigny Brasserie, where the chefs prepare a delicious and seasonally changing menu that includes local dishes like jambalaya and crawfish étouffée.
