The town is best known as the home of the Zeppelin airship company, founded by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin in 1900. The Zeppelin Museum is located in the town, and the original airship hangar (the Zeppelin Hangar) is now a popular tourist attraction. Friedrichshafen is also a popular base for exploring the surrounding area, which is noted for its scenic lakes and mountains.
