This calm resort town on Lake Balaton's northeastern shore has tree-lined beaches, thermal springs, and limestone cliffs. Popular for swimming and sailing in summer.
Balatonalmádi stretches along Lake Balaton's northern shore, where you'll find concrete swimming platforms extending into the water, an 18th-century wine cellar, and two distinctive churches. You can cycle through pine forests to reach panoramic lake views, swim in designated zones, or join the weekend Almadi festival crowds in summer for live music and local food.
Swimming and Beaches in Balatonalmádi
You'll find 1.5 kilometers of beaches along Lake Balaton, open from May 15 to September 30. The concrete swimming areas include marked zones for different water depths, changing rooms, and wide sunbathing platforms. Walking paths connect the beach sections, and you can rent paddleboats or watch windsurfers glide across the water.
Cycling Around Lake Balaton
The paved cycling path between Balatonalmádi and nearby towns makes for easy day trips. Try the 15-kilometer downhill route from Veszprém to Almádi, which winds through pine forests and past Lake Balaton viewpoints. The path includes several rest stops with benches and water fountains. Some sections have an 8% gradient, so check your bike's brakes before starting the descent.
Religious Architecture
The Calvinist church's thick stone wall enclosure dates from the 1800s, with carved stone details around its windows and entrance. Inside the Catholic church, built between 1977 and 1979, you can see colorful frescoes depicting biblical scenes covering the walls from floor to ceiling. Both churches allow visitors to enter between 9 AM and 5 PM, except during services.
Wine Cellar and Historical Buildings
An 18th-century building in the town center contains a large underground cellar that's becoming a wine museum. You can see original stone walls and wooden beams from the 1700s in both the cellar and main building. The museum plans to display traditional wine-making tools and host tastings of local Balaton wines.
Summer Events
The Almadi summer festival runs every weekend from June through September. Local bands play Hungarian folk and contemporary music at outdoor stages near the waterfront and in the main square. Food stalls serve langos (fried bread with toppings), grilled sausages, and regional wines. The festival schedule changes weekly, with updates posted on boards throughout town.
