Sabbioneta is a small, quiet town in the north of Italy, off the beaten track for most tourists. But it's well worth a visit for its beautiful Renaissance architecture and historical importance. The town was founded in the 16th century by the Marquis of Mantua, Vincenzo I Gonzaga, as a model city, and many of the buildings are in the style of the period. Highlights include the Ducal Palace, the Teatro Olimpico and the churches of Santa Maria della Vittoria and San Sebastiano. There's also a small museum dedicated to the town's founder. It's a quiet town, perfect for a relaxing stroll or a picnic in the park.
