Horlivka

Horlivka is a city located in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Horlivka Raion. As of the 2001 Ukrainian Census, the population of the city was 360,027.

The city was founded in 1875 as a settlement for workers of the Donetsk Railways. The name of the city is derived from the Russian word for "railway worker" (horlivy). It was originally known as Yuzovka (Юзовка), after the Yuzovka Coal Mine. In 1924, the city was renamed Stalino (Сталино), after Joseph Stalin. In 1961, the city was renamed again to Horlivka.
