The town was founded in 1350 by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. It is named after him and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Karlovy Vary is known for its hot springs and its healing mineral water. The springs were originally used by the Celts and the Romans. The town is also known for its art, music, and architecture. The main square, Karlovo náměstí, is a beautiful baroque square with a number of well-preserved buildings. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is the dominant structure on the square. The town is also home to a number of art galleries, including the Museum of Karlovy Vary Arts, the Jan Becher Museum, and the Moser Glass Museum.
