Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a ski resort town in Bavaria, southern Germany. It is the largest town in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Oberbayern region. Nearby is Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze. The town was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympic Games. After World War II, the town was divided into two parts, Garmisch and Partenkirchen, because of their different political affiliations. Today, the two towns are merged into a single district. The main tourist attraction in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the Zugspitze, which can be reached by the Zugspitze Railway, a rack railway that climbs the mountain from Garmisch.
